Operational Phases of the Intervention on the Balustrade
1. Removal of Incongruent Additions
Demolition and removal of the under-eaves cornice sections previously reconstructed in cement, which were incompatible with the historic structure.
2. Cleaning of Surfaces
Cleaning of the surfaces using a low-pressure hot water pressure washer, aimed at removing deposits and superficial dirt.
3. Verification and Structural Consolidation
Detailed inspection of the balustrade’s stability, particularly the central section, with targeted interventions to restore structural characteristics and ensure safe use of the parapet.
4. Installation of Localized Pins
Localized insertion of stainless steel and fiberglass pins to connect fractured elements, restoring structural continuity and optimal load distribution.
5. Banding of Degraded Columns
Consolidation of columns in an advanced state of degradation using carbon fiber bands and epoxy resin, subsequently color-matched to minimize visual impact.
6. Reconstruction of Missing Columns
Creation of molds replicating the original surfaces and reconstruction using lime-based mortar with colored marble powders.
7. Filling of Stone Surfaces
Closure of lacunae and micro-filling of stone surfaces with lime-based mortars and appropriately colored marble powders.
8. Cortical Consolidation and Protection of Stone Surfaces
Application of ethyl silicate consolidant on all stone elements, followed by a final water-repellent treatment to restore surface cohesion and protect the materials.
